Beauty Shots
December 4
Together with Koptercam, I spent an entire day as a lighting and camera assistant at Fireframe, a virtual greenscreen and LED-panel studio. I had no prior experience working in an environment like this, but my first impression was that it was incredibly impressive.
The lighting equipment was lightweight and easy to set up. We used a spotted Nanlite LED as the key light and two Vortex LEDs with snapbags and diffusion as fill lights, connecting all the lights wirelessly through DMX to a gaffer's control box. Once the lighting was adjusted, I also handled the slate. While it may sound straightforward, it can be challenging since you need to keep track of the shot list, lenses, filters, names, and all the other critical details that might be essential for the editor during post-production.
Working in a large-scale studio environment like this has been a valuable experience. I now understand why this is such an important option for filmmaking and media production, offering total control over light, sound, and, of course, the background. The LED wall was particularly impressive—unbelievably realistic with its lighting and colors, all powered by Unreal Engine 5.
