A few weeks ago, I was asked to be in charge of the lighting planning — as gaffer, for a fictional film production via my film school university. I received some details from the script and really liked the concept and enthusiasm from the photographer and director. Soon, we scouted the locations for the film. Planning and controlling lights in broad daylight proved to be very challenging.
Despite the difficult conditions during filming days, we achieved very good results, even though the weather wasn't on our side. The rain poured down, the snow was heavy and deep, the generator stopped working, extension wires broke, and pretty much anything that could make our first assistant director more stressed with the schedule happened.
Nevertheless, despite the difficulties, I believe everyone on the set brought more than enough to the table to contribute to the production, and I'm grateful to work with such amazing people. This is the best way to learn.
Even though it’s not in the final cut of the film, I also had the great honor of standing in as a guard, a role that suited me very well.
